Effects of Growth Retardants on Growth , Flowering , and Germination of Harvested Seed in Clinopodium chinense var . parviflorum

Abstract
Experiments were conducted to develop Korean-native Clinopodium chinense var. parviflorum as a new floricultural crop by treatment of growth retardants. Plant height was significantly retarded by soil drench treatment of uniconazole 0.5 §·/pot by 44.1 §¯ as compared to 59.7 §¯ of control. Flower number and flowering were not affected by uniconazole 0.5 §·/pot treatment. Uniconazole 0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 §·/pot treatment had no significant effect on plant growth. Paclobutrazol 0.25 and 0.5 §·/pot treatment decreased plant height, verticil-node number, and number of flowering branches. Ancimidol 0.1-1 §·/pot treatment and ethephon 250 and 500 §·¡¤L^(-1) spray had no effect. Ethephon 1,000 §· §·¡¤L^(-1) spray showed some dwarfing effect but it delayed flowering. Thus, uniconazole 0.5 §·/pot soil drench was the most effective treatment for dwarfing of Clinopodium chinense var. parviflorum. Harvested seeds from retardants-treated plants were germinated in incubator in winter to ascertain whether retarding effect was maintained to next generation. Germination rate of harvested seeds from paclobutrazol 0.25, 0.5 §·/pat treated plants were 36.8 and 36.0%, respectively and 42.0% of uniconazole 0.5 §·/pot treatment. It showed significant decrease in germination rate as compared to 72.0% of non-treated plots.
